Stress is a term used to describe the emotional and physical reactions to the ever increasing demands of everyday life. To understand what causes stress, remember that your brain is hard-wired with an alarm system for your protection. When your brain perceives a threat, it signals your body to release a burst of hormones to fuel your response. This has been labeled the “fight or flight” response. The sudden flood of these stress hormones causes changes in the body that include increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and muscle tension. The fight or flight response also makes it difficult to focus on other tasks because your brain is occupied with the perceived threat. Once the threat is gone, your body should normally return to a relaxed state. However, due to the pressures of modern life, your alarm system rarely shuts off and you remain flooded with stress. That’s why stress management is so important. Without stress management, you remain physically and emotionally on high alert. Over time, high levels of stress can lead to serious health problems. There no need to wait until stress has a negative impact on your health, relationships, or quality of life. Dr. Christine can teach you the necessary tools and techniques to manage stress effectively and reset your alarm system.
